Mogul's Nonwoven Air Filter Media Portfolio
Mogul's air filtration media range covers the complete material stack of a modern filter element — from coarse support and pre-filtration layers through to fine and ultra-fine particle capture media. All materials are produced at Mogul's ISO-certified manufacturing facilities in Gaziantep, Turkey, and are available for global supply.
The MOPET® spunbond fabrics from Mogul demonstrate superior dimensional stability and chemical resistance alongside uniform structure. The product exists in two versions which include point-bonded and flat-bonded structures and provides:
- • The fabric includes round or tri-lobal filament geometries which increase surface area.
- • The absence of binders and resins provides thermal and chemical stability to the product.
- • The material demonstrates mold resistance and maintains high strength throughout both machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD).
- • The product allows pleating and forming capabilities through calendering and micro-creping and die cutting processes.
- • The product finds its best applications in air filtration panels and vacuum cleaner bags as well as pre-filter layers within composite systems.
Why MOPET® for air filtration:
- • Tri-lobal filament geometry increases surface area for improved particle interception
- • Binder-free and resin-free construction — no chemical extractables, full thermal stability
- • Superior performance in both machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD) tensile strength
- • Excellent mold resistance and dimensional stability under airflow load
- • Pleatable, die-cuttable, and compatible with calendering and micro-creping for filter element production
Primary air filtration applications: HVAC pre-filters and final layers · industrial dust collection · vacuum cleaner dustbags · pool & spa support layers
Buffalo™ – Bi-Component PET Spunbond
The bi-component PET fabric Buffalo from Mogul consists of PET/CoPET filaments that exist in tipped tri-lobal or round core/sheath configurations. Its structure offers:
- • Uniform bonding and minimal linting
- • Superior abrasion resistance
Primary air filtration applications: HVAC system filters · appliance panel filters · automotive cabin support layers · industrial ventilation
Mogul's meltblown polypropylene media is produced by melting PP and extruding it through fine nozzles under high-velocity hot air — creating self-bonded microfiber webs with fiber diameters typically in the 1–5 micron range. This ultra-fine fiber structure delivers high surface area, high filtration efficiency, and controlled pore sizes that are unachievable with spunbond technology alone.
Technical characteristics:
- • Fiber diameter: 1–5 microns (vs. 10–20 microns for typical spunbond)
- • Available in standalone sheets or as part of SM (spunbond-meltblown) and SMS composite structures
- • Customizable electrostatic charge (electret treatment) for enhanced sub-micron particle capture
- • Low pressure drop architecture for energy-efficient filter designs
Primary air filtration applications: Fine dust pre-filtration · respiratory protection media · HEPA composite backing · surgical mask inner layers
SMS & Composite Nonwoven — Multi-Layer Filter Architectures
For applications that require the mechanical strength of spunbond combined with the fine filtration performance of meltblown, Mogul offers composite nonwoven structures — including SM (Spunbond-Meltblown), SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond), and custom multi-layer configurations. These are produced in a single pass to ensure interlayer bonding integrity.
- • SM: single-sided support layer + fine filtration core
- • SMS: dual-sided support with protected meltblown core for higher abrasion environments
- • MMM: multi-layer meltblown for progressive filtration gradient
- • Custom configurations available with varying basis weights per layer
Note for filter designers: Mogul can work with filter element manufacturers to specify the exact composite stack — basis weight per layer, bonding method, and surface treatment — to match target efficiency class and pressure drop specifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Nonwoven air filter media is a manufactured textile-like material produced directly from polymer fibers — without weaving or knitting. Unlike woven materials, nonwovens achieve filtration through a controlled fiber matrix rather than a defined aperture pattern, allowing finer particle capture with lower pressure drop. Compared to glass fiber media, synthetic nonwovens offer superior flexibility, higher durability under pulse-jet cleaning, and a fully recyclable end-of-life profile — while achieving comparable or superior filtration efficiency in modern composite configurations.
The achievable efficiency class depends on the complete filter element design (media area, pleat depth, face velocity, housing) rather than the media alone. Mogul's meltblown PP and SMS composite media have been used in filter element designs achieving ePM1 up to 55–70%, ePM2.5 up to 70–80%, and ePM10 up to 85%+ under ISO 16890 test conditions. Our MOPET® and Buffalo™ spunbond materials function as support, pre-filtration, and coarse-grade layers. We can provide efficiency data for individual media grades to support your filter development.
Yes. Custom basis weight, roll width, and bonding configuration are standard practice at Mogul. Our production lines support basis weights from approximately 15 gsm (fine meltblown) to 300+ gsm (heavy support layers), and roll widths from 0.5 m to over 4.2 m depending on the product line. Development trials and production qualification runs are supported by Mogul's technical team.
Both are polyester spunbond fabrics, but with important structural differences. MOPET® uses continuous round or tri-lobal PET filaments — providing an excellent balance of air permeability, particle retention, and processing performance for standard HVAC filter media roles. Buffalo™ is a bi-component PET/CoPET fabric where CoPET sheathing enables superior fiber bonding, higher abrasion resistance, and better cross-directional tensile strength — making it the preferred choice where filter elements face mechanical stress in installation or where resistance to repeated cleaning cycles is critical.
Electret treatment for meltblown PP media can be applied to enhance sub-micron particle capture without a proportional increase in pressure drop — this is the mechanism behind high-efficiency synthetic HVAC media and respiratory filters. Mogul can discuss electret options as part of custom product development. Standard meltblown grades without electret treatment are also available for applications where charge stability over time is not guaranteed.
Yes. Buffalo™ BiCo polyester resins comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 food contact regulations, supporting use in air filtration systems in food processing environments. For pharmaceutical and cleanroom applications, Mogul can provide low-linting, binder-free polyester spunbond and fine-grade meltblown media. Please contact our technical team to discuss your specific regulatory documentation requirements.
